To pray is not just to ask, but to listen also. That's why prayer is hard, that's why prayer feels more like work.
For as long as I remember I was never a praying girl. I was always a doing girl. I liked activity more than sedentary, or so I thought.
When we think of prayer the picture that comes to mind is the one with hands cupped together, head bowed down and inwardly whispers uttered. We imagine a quite place, often surrounded by painted glass and knees touching the cold grounds. Prayer gives us this impression of a desperate plea or heartfelt repentance.
Prayer is the need of the soul to get empty and full constantly.
I was good at doing neither. When it came to emptying myself in prayer I asked only about the most urgent needs and forgot about my basic needs of love and belonging that my soul was starving for. As for the repentance bit, I confessed mostly the events that I either got caught as doing wrong or thought to be wrong by people I wanted to impress.
So, only later when I fell into a situation where things got out of control and there were more uncertainties than certainties I started to lean more and more on prayer. At first, I was confused about the best time to pray, how and where, but I started where I was, at home in the early hours of the day with one word and that changed everything.
I asked, God, tell me one thing, just one thing, with one word that my kids, my husband, myself...he, she.... needs today and I will pray that. It was so simple, yet simply powerful. That's how my book One Word Prayers For Mums was birthed.
It's a collection from my morning diaries during a time when I could not think or find the right way, words and practice to pray. It's a simple and easy guide. It was, for me the start of forming a habit that not only impacted my life positively but filled me with more life.
Prayer is for the soul what air is for the body, we can't live without it.
We need to empty and fill our souls regularly. Our souls get overwhelmed by worry, pain and crushing disappointments, exhale them with prayer. Our souls need love, acceptance, joy, peace, forgiveness... Inhale them through prayer.
Start today. Start now. God is waiting to hear and speak to you
